Ontario’s 18U Golden Girls

Posted in 2010 Girls 18U Black on May 5, 2010 by 1263ny

It was a typical first day for the U18 Girls at the Provincial Championships at RIM Park in Waterloo on the weekend.

After placing third in pool play on Friday, the girls were more determined than ever to prove that they were indeed the best team in Ontario. Fueled by this great desire to succeed and further inspired by the birth of baby Owen, the newest addition to our Durham Attack family, our girls came back on Saturday to win all three matches in the second round of pool play.

The first match against Georgetown had very little impact on our girls as they took both games, 25-21 and 25-17. In Match 2, the Waterloo Predators proved to be very formidable opponents taking the first game 25-20, but, in the end, they could not match the strength and determination of the Durham Attack girls who came back to win the next two games 25-20 and 21-19. After being defeated by Forest City on Friday, our girls set out to ensure that this would not happen again. Durham Attack came back with a vengence on Saturday winning the third match in two games, 25-15 and 25-16.

As the Quarter Finals match was about to begin on Sunday morning, everyone could feel the energy, excitement, and confidence of the 18U Durham Attack team as it prepared to take the Aurora team by storm.  Undefeated in this match, 25-22 and 25-13, our girls moved on to the Semi-finals against the Ottawa Mavericks winning two consecutive games again, 25-23 and 25-20. As…

ok, it looks like we are missing the end of the article, but suffice it to say that OUR 18U GIRLS ARE PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS111

U18 Girls at the Beast of the East

Posted in 2010 Girls 18U Black, Uncategorized on April 4, 2010 by 1263ny

On Friday March 26th, the Beast of the East began with a game between the Durham Attack Girls U18 and Forest City. Forest City took the first game 25-22, but our girls regrouped and got back in the match winning the next two games, 25-15 and 15-6. Later that same evening, our girls played the Waterloo Predators and won two games straight, 25-22 and 25-18. The following day, pool play continued with the Attack playing both the Ottawa Mavericks and Mac. Neither team stood a chance against the high energy and confidence of our Durham Attack team. These victories put our girls in first place as they prepared to move to the Quarter Finals on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, the South County Bandits proved to be very formidable opponents on this day and beat our girls 25-21 and 25-22.

Here’s to looking ahead to some great volleyball in New Orleans this weekend, April 2-4, and to the upcoming Provincials in Waterloo.

There were highs and there were lows this weekend at the OVA tournament in Georgetown on February 27th, but there was never a dull moment for the Girls U18 Black team. Even after the shaky start in the first game of  pool play against Forest City splitting the 2 games 14-25 and 25-23, the Durham Attack girls came back in Match 2 to defeat the DRVC in two games winning 25-22 and 27-25. The cross-0ver match that followed against the Halton Hurricanes was another nail-biter as they took our girls to three games. Luckily, Durham Attack fought hard to the end to win that match 25-21, 19-25 and finally 15-13. As our girls moved into the Quarter Finals against the Georgetown Impact, the roller coaster ride continued. Georgetown took the first game 12-25, but our girls persevered and won the next two games 25-13 and 15-8. Inspired by the amazing comeback against Georgetown, the Durham Attack girls easily defeated the Waterloo Predators in the Semi-finals winning both games 25-18 and 25-11. The excitement contiued to build once again as our girls looked forward to playing the final match of the tournament against their long-time rivals, the Scarborough Titans. After beating the Titans handily in Game 1, 25-17, our girls moved into Game 2 with much confidence and optimism. Mid-way through this game, however, we found ourselves back on the roller coaster as the Titans defeated our girls 27-25. As both teams battled for the GOLD in Game 3, it was Durham Attack that finally emerged as the mightiest winning 15-13. Congratulations girls and coaches for winning the gold and for currently being ranked first in the standings for Provincials!

The Girls U18 Black team had an opportunity to play some really great volleyball at the Great Lakes Center Presidents’ Day Tournament outside Chicago on the weekend of February 13-15. After finishing in a 3-way tie in pool play on Saturday against some of the best teams in the U.S., our girls were really feeling the love as they competed against the Wisconsin Capitals and the Waterloo Predators on Valentine’s Day. Durham Attack beat Wisconsin in 4 games; 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, and 24-21. Our girls also went on to defeat the Predators in 3 games; 25-14, 25-20, and 25-23. After some exciting games on Sunday, the Durham Attack Girls U18 team moved confidently to the Semi-finals on Monday morning playing against a team from Atlanta, Georgia who eventually went down in flames losing to our girls in 3 consecutive game; 25-23, 25-23, 25-21. Durham Attack continued to dig deep as they went on to play the Dunes from Indiana in the final match of the tournament. They came out really strong in Game 1 winning 25-16, then gave the second game away, 18-25, only to come back with another win in Game 3, 25-21. Unfortunately, the match continued to Game 5 where the Indiana Dunes finally defeated our team, 11-15.

All in all, a lot of fun for everyone on and off the court and a great opportunity for the Durham Attack to play amazing volleyball against some of the U.S.A.’s best teams!

They’re back!! Girls U18 Black Strikes GOLD!

Look who’s in their ‘element’ now!  On February 6th at McMaster University, the Girls U18 team set the tone for the tournament beginning with the first match of the day in pool play against Forest City winning both games handily 25-11 and 25-19. After that, no other team stood a chance. The girls went on to dominate the court for the rest of the day. Pool play concluded with a strong match against the Waterloo Predators (25-17; 25-20) putting Durham Attack in first place as they moved to the Quarter Finals to play DRVC. From the moment our girls stepped onto the court, the Durham Rebels (U17) knew it was game over for them. They met the confidence and determination of a team prepared to show no mercy and lost both games 25-14 and 25-11. In the Semi-finals match, Defensa, too, was completely defenseless as our girls easily took both games from them 25-11 and 25-21. In the finals, Durham Attack preyed on the Predators once again snatching the GOLD medal from them in two games winning 25-19 and 25-16. All in all, an amazing day for the Attack, both on and off the court! Congratulations girls and coaches!

Thank you, as well, to our injured players, Alanna and Sarah, for their support on the bench. Here’s wishing you both a very speedy recovery!

On January 16th, the Girls U18 Black team participated in their second OVA tournament of the season at Brock University. After placing second in pool-play, the girls went on to defeat the Waterloo Predators in the Quarter Finals. The girls fought hard in the first set winning 25-21, then battled in the second set to the end losing 24-26, but came back with a vengence to take the third game 15-10. Unfortunately, the Toronto Element defeated them in the Semi-finals after the girls easily took both games from them in pool play, winning 25-22 and 25-16. In the end, the Attack played the South County Bandits for the Bronze and won it in two games 25-20 and 25-19.

Welcome new team member, Samantha Guyatt!

Here’s wishing Alanna Kirchner a very speedy recovery from her surgery!

Durham Attack Girls are Golden in Buffalo

On January 9th/10th, the Durham Attack 18U Black Girls Team competed in the Can-Am Blizzard Bash in Buffalo, New York. 24 elite teams from the US and Canada competed in a fast-paced, high level competition that saw the top 8 seeded teams in two power pools to strengthen the level of play.

The first round of pool play saw a slow start with a split game against the Scarborough Falcons 17U (25-11; 22-25), then a successful game against VFx 18U (25-16; 25-18) and another exciting split game against NFVB 17U (25-10; 15-25)- who definitely made us step up our game! Managing to come first in our pool, the afternoon re-pool successfully pitted us against Lakeside Riptide 17U (25-15; 25-23), and then Win City Kaepa Crush (25-10; 25-13). This was a good way to end the day and go back to the hotel.

Back at the hotel, the players, coaches and parents enjoyed a delicious Italian feast. The girls showered and went to bed while the parents entered into a lively euchre tournament with plenty of spirit… or was that ‘”spirits”?

The next morning, the final re-pool game saw the girls win decisively against Toronto Element 17U (25-8; 25-22). We all agreed that the first set of this match was the best these girls have ever played. They were relaxed, they gelled as a team, they demonstrated their skills that they had been learning/practising…and it was fantastic to watch!

Moving into the Championship bracket, the girls once again came up against NFVB 18U. The first set went to Attack (25-23). NFVB rallied, adjusted their game plan, and took the second set (19-25). Determined not to lose, our girls come out quickly in set 3. Effective passing, “keep them on their toes” setting, and some really nice kills saw the girls quickly take the vision of gold out of their opponent’s reach. Then, “stuff happened” and the NFVB team started to close the gap. Fortunately, after a timely time-out, the girls re-”focused” (pronounced Ian-style) and Durham Attack won decisively (15-10).

Gold medals and blue T-shirts for all! A great weekend all round! Congratulations, girls and coaches!
