Happy Birthday Bev!!!

Posted in 2013-2014 on September 12, 2013 by DurhamAttack

All of us would like to send a huge HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Bev Gearin whose birthday was today.  Bev  (and Charlie) are a huge part of the operations of our club, and everything you like about our uniforms (which we think will be the nicest in the OVA again this season) you owe to Bev and Charlie who work tirelessly on them all summer and through the season.

Apparently Bev’s front lawn was covered in wooden signs this morning, I’m not going to say anymore except Happy Birthday Bev, and many happy returns.

Send her a birthday wish at !!!

14u Girls Head Coach Kevin Hellyer – Six Time Tier 1 National Champion

Posted in 2013-2014 on September 5, 2013 by DurhamAttack

Kevin Hellyer joined the Durham Attack coaching staff in the Fall of 1999.  Since then, he has had a huge impact on the Club and has developed many of the top athletes in the province.

As an assistant coach Kevin was mentored by some of the more successful coaches in our club.  As an assistant coach in 2002, he coached our 16U tier 1 Western National Champions. In 2007 he transitioned to the head coach ranks and took  our 14U Black girls to their first tier 1 National Championship.  In 2008, Kevin’s 15U Girls won Ontario tier 1 15U and 16U championships as well as the 15U tier 1 Nationals East Championship.  Later that summer, Kevin was the head coach of the gold medal winning team at the Ontario Summer Games. In 2009 his 15U girls won tier 1 Silver medals at both Nationals East and Nationals West.  This same group won tier 1 gold at Nationals East in 2010.  In 2011 his 16U squad won another two tier 1 national medals, winning Eastern Canadian Gold.  2012 brought with it one of Kevin’s greatest team accomplishments, winning both Provincial and National tier 1 Championships, at the 17U level.

In all, Kevin has won a total of 6 tier 1 National Championships, with 4 different groups of athletes.  Many of his athletes have become top recruits at division 1 NCAA programs, as well as All-Stars in the CIS.

In 2009 Kevin received a Recognition Award from the Ontario Volleyball Association for his outstanding contribution to the sport of volleyball in the province. Later in 2011, Kevin was awarded the OVA Achievement Award.

Kevin is an enthusiastic coach who teaches his athletes the values of hard work and the joy of achieving success as both an individual and as a member of the team.  He has been the lead coach at the Durham Attack Summer Camp and is eager to help young athletes fall in love with volleyball.  He supports his girls year round, following their progress on the beach during the summer.  Kevin is also an elementary school teacher and coach and is the co-founder of a new training program for 5-10 year olds, in the Durham Region; Team12 Youth Volleyball.

After a few years working with the upper age groups of our club, Kevin has made a decision to return to the developmental phase, hoping to instill in these young athletes the skills they will need to succeed at 18U and beyond.

15U Girls Assistant Coach Camille Lefaive

Posted in 2013-2014 on September 3, 2013 by DurhamAttack

My name is Camille Lefaive, and this will be my 3rd year coaching with Durham Attack. I played with Attack for 4 years until different circumstances led me to coaching, which I found out to be a blessing in disguise as it has become one of my greatest passions.

I also just completed my first year as a CIT at Madawaska Volleyball Camp this summer!

I look forward to completing my level 1 certification in the near future and continuing being a role model for young girls.

Introducing Girls Coach Melonie Allin

Posted in 2013-2014 on August 30, 2013 by DurhamAttack

Melonie Allin is a great example of our young female coaches who bring the skills and experience gained from not only club volleyball, but from university playing and coaching experience.  She has been coaching our girls teams for six years.

After playing club, Mel played 2 years post secondary volleyball at UNC Pembroke and 3 years at McMaster University. In her final year of university she helped coach the Mac 20U team under Tim Louks.  Upon graduation she took an assistant coaching position at Brock University with their women’s varsity team for the 2006/2007 season.

At the completion of that season she returned to the Durham Region and has been coaching with Durham Attack ever since, most recently as an assistant coach for the 15U Provincial and National East and West Championship team last season.

She continues to play competitively with a Toronto team and recently returned from Torino, Italy where she and her team won the World Masters Games Gold medal in the 30+ age division.

Outside of volleyball, Mel teaches grade 1 French Immersion in Whitby.
